On December 17, 2010, the self-immolation of the Tunisian street vendor Mohammad Bouaziz ignited an unprecedented wave of popular uprisings all over the MENA region. About ten years later, as the transformative power of this social movement for social justice seemed to have lost its revolutionary momentum, another outstanding wave erupted, shaking at the very foundation a variety of other polities (Algeria, Sudan, Lebanon, Iraq) which had been only marginally touched by the so-called “first wave”.
After having attempted to challenge dominant success/failure approaches through which the so-called “first wave” of social movements has been mainly understood in previous webinars, this session aims at looking into the so-called “second wave”. It seeks to provide an overview of the genealogies of, and contentious backlashes against the Algerian and Sudanese uprisings from the lens of socio-economic grievances.
The webinar is part of the thematic cycle “Beyond Winter and Spring: politics and social contention in the MENA region after 2011”, by The Centre for Social Sciences, Research and Action within the framework of the research programme on social justice and social contention in the Arab world.
