1. Multidisciplinary research “in context”:
The centre conducts and facilitates original, interdisciplinary, and scientific research that is published in various formats (including a peer-reviewed journal “the Civil Society Review”, articles, policy briefs, mappings, and visuals). Research is developed and conducted by the centre’s hub of scholars, fellows, and network. It aims to publish grounded, contextualised, and transformative research, combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies. As an action-oriented research hub, the centre is committed to an open access policy, making all of the centre’s publications available to a wider public. This stems from the centre’s mission to foster social change and action through free access to information, innovative uses of social science, digital technologies, and publication and exchange of knowledge. The centre adopts a participatory, grounded methodology that aims at informing multi-level action through evidence-based and contextualised knowledge. The interdisciplinary dimension of the centre’s research allows it to draw from, and build synergies across disciplines, as well as across the scientific, the practitioner, and the policy fields. This strives to contribute to critical thinking and action, and informing public debate and public policy. -
2. Tools for civil society actors:
Daleel Madani, the global civil society network. Launched in 2006 in Lebanon, and globally in 2019, Daleel Madani aims to strengthen cooperation between civil society actors, thus limiting duplication of work, and enhancing the civil society sector. In addition, it is dedicated to promoting accessible information about civil society, in a belief in the right to information and in the importance of transparent civil society work. - 3. Access to information and knowledge for all:
The centre provides tailored coaching and mentoring, as well as guidebooks and workshops, through the Civil Society Incubator. The Incubator is designed to foster the creation, development, and growth of local civil society and public action initiatives, organisations, or projects. It is done through an array of services such as provision of office space, coaching and mentoring on technical issues, management, administrative matters, research, advocacy, networking, and web development among others. The Alternative Academy, within the Civil Society Incubator and in partnership with Jibal Association, aims at disembedding university courses form the campus and making available a wide range of courses, from social and political sciences (anthropology, sociology….) to natural sciences (physics, climatology, entomology…) as well as architecture and arts. These are led by university-level instructors or experienced individuals that are experts in their fields. - 4. Services:
