Marie-Noëlle AbiYaghi, PhDCo-DirectorMarie-Noëlle AbiYaghi is a political scientist with over two decades of experience at the intersection of research, academia, and practice. She currently serves as Co-Director of the centre, where she conceptualised and launched its research axis, expanding the centre’s identity and positioning it as a site of rigorous, reflexive knowledge production at the interface of academic inquiry and practitioner engagement.
In her leadership role, Marie-Noëlle provides strategic direction and upholds the scientific rigour of contextualised, multidisciplinary research, while actively positioning homegrown knowledge within global theoretical debates and international fora. Her research interests span the sociology of contentious politics, with a focus on socialisation processes, collective behaviour, transformation of commitment and logics of disengagement, as well as the reproduction of social control and discipline. She also investigates the sociology of public action and the epistemology of open and alternative social sciences.
Her work is grounded in the Lebanese and broader SWANA context, examining topics such as antisectarian movements, feminist mobilisations, civil society, gender dynamics, and the social question. She has published widely in French and English, including edited volumes, peer-reviewed articles, and policy-oriented research.
Her trajectory reflects a deliberate articulation of academic rigour and applied practice: she has served as Senior Researcher at the Centre for Lebanese Studies, as a Political Science lecturer at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik and Saint Joseph University of Beirut, and has held positions within international organisations working at the nexus of research and policy.
Marie-Noëlle holds a PhD in Political Science from the Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, France.
